Day 2/Trip 2018 (20th May 2018)

Mount Gambier-Beachport-Robe-Kingston-Jacks Point-Tailem Bend-Hahndorf

Started day with excellent coffee in Mount Gambier, and visit to Blue Lake lookout; Blue Lake, more a steely winter grey. Headed to Beachport where tourist info folks were super helpful. Did the scenic drive including the Pool of Siloam, which is reputedly 7 times saltier than sea (misnamed Beachport Lake on Google Maps). Delicious Aussie pie for lunch. Robe our next stop, and a visit to the rocky cliffs at The Obelisk (err, red and white striped concrete cone!). NW along the Corrong coast – flat, swampy land – eerily beautiful. We stopped at Jacks Point (obviously), and didn’t see the pelicans, but even better, saw grey kangaroos up close and personal. Stopped for night at Hahndorf, settled by German settlers, and centre of wine region. More glamping – cabin – and hearty meal at German Arms. Great day!

    • John Schulz Unfortunately Hahndorf has become a little too touristy. Obviously now for overseas visitors and ex-pats. Lol
    • Jennifer Gawne Robe is notable in that it was the point where Chinese heading for Ballarat and Bendigo would come ashore when Geelong and Melbourne ports would not let them disembark
    • John Schulz …and they have good crayfish.
